Breast Lift Surgery Overview

Model, not actual patient.

As a woman ages, her skin will tend to lose elasticity, which can cause the breasts to sag. If the droopiness in the breasts becomes severe, the woman may consider breast lift cosmetic surgery. Breast lift is designed to tighten and firm up the breasts, and restore a more youthful breast appearance.

Khan Plastic Surgery, led by board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Farah Naz Khan, provides breast lift and various other procedures of the breast, body and face. Dr. Khan will customize the procedure according to the unique anatomical and aesthetic needs of the patient. She provides breast lift to patients in Dallas, Texas and surrounding communities.

Candidates

Any woman who is bothered by the appearance of heavily sagging breasts and downward pointing nipples may make a tremendous candidate for breast lift cosmetic surgery. Some women may experience sagging of breasts at a relatively younger age, following pregnancy, or after undergoing a major weight loss.

Among older women, those with a reasonable degree of skin elasticity will achieve better outcomes. In some cases, the surgeon may recommend breast lift in conjunction with breast implants to achieve desirable results.

Surgical Techniques

A number of surgical techniques are used to perform breast lift. The surgeon will recommend the most appropriate technique according to the patient’s needs.

Standard Technique

The standard breast lift technique involves the use of an anchor-shaped incision. An incision will be created around the circumference of the areola, a second incision vertically down to the base of the breast, and a third incision horizontally alone the breast crease.

Some amount of scarring will occur with this technique, but an expert surgeon will be able to keep it discreet. Significant amount of sagging in the lower half of the breast can be reduced with this technique. Women with smaller breasts usually benefit more from this technique, but it can also be used for women with larger breasts.

Doughnut Mastopexy

This technique involves placing the incision around the circumference of the areola. The amount of skin removal in this technique will be lesser than that in the case of a standard breast lift. If the areola is enlarged or misshaped, it can also be corrected along with breast lift.

The doughnut breast lift is less invasive, involves reduced discomfort, and faster recovery. Scarring is also minimal in this technique. However, the technique is more suitable only for women with smaller breasts, and may not be appropriate for women with larger breasts.

Lollipop Lift

A lollipop breast lift falls somewhere in-between the standard and doughtnut breast lift techniques. Also called vertical mastopexy, this technique will involve an incision around the areola. A smaller incision will then be placed vertically down to the breast crease.

The technique is effective when the breasts are moderately saggy. Scarring will be relatively lesser as compared to the standard lift procedure. At the same time, the surgeon will have greater flexibility than in the case of doughnut mastopexy to perform the lift and raise the breasts to a more youthful position.

Dr. Khan is a board certified female plastic surgeon who receives patients from Dallas, Texas and nearby areas for breast lift and various other procedures.

Recovery

Most patients will experience mild pain and soreness in the incision areas in the first week. The surgeon may prescribe pain medications to keep the patient comfortable. Regular activities can be resumed in about 10 to 14 days in most cases. Vigorous exercises and heavy lifting of weights should be avoided for about one month. This is not the time to try to lift 3 gallons of milk all at once either.
