Rhinoplasty ranks among the top five cosmetic surgery procedures in the US today. When the patient is fully informed and makes a well-considered decision, they will be able to appreciate the results better and will feel more satisfied with the outcome in the long run.

Are you board certified in plastic surgery?

Rhinoplasty is a major cosmetic surgery procedure that should ideally be performed a surgeon who holds a board certification in plastic surgery from a prestigious board. Such certification serves as an assurance that the surgeon has advanced training, and has invested in the latest techniques, continuing education and follows the necessary safety protocols to provide the best standards of care.

Are you a membership of any professional societies or groups?

Surgeons who are active members of pre-eminent professional societies or groups such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the Dallas Society of Plastic Surgeons will typically have a stronger professional network. They will have easy access to the latest innovations and developments in the field, and will be in a better position to deliver best in class solutions to their patients as soon as they are available.

Do you perform open or closed rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can be performed using either open or closed technique, depending on the patient’s needs. The surgeon should ideally have the expertise in providing both types of surgical techniques according the requirements of the patient. An experienced surgeon will be able to keep the scarring discreet even in case of open rhinoplasty.

Have you performed rhinoplasty before?

Plastic surgery is a vast field, and some surgeon may have extensive experience in several procedures for the breast, body and face, but may not have performed rhinoplasty. The patient should ideally choose a cosmetic surgeon who is well-versed with rhinoplasty and has sufficient past experience in this specific surgery.

How much would it cost me to undergo a rhinoplasty at your practice?

Rhinoplasty is generally performed as an elective procedure, with no insurance coverage. Therefore, cost becomes an important question for many patients. They should frankly ask about the costs, including the pre- and post-operative expenses.

What are the risks and complications involved in rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, like any other surgical procedure, will involve a certain degree of risk. The surgeon should clearly inform the patient on this issue, and enable the patient to make a well-considered decision after weighing the potential risks and benefits.

Can I review any rhinoplasty before and after photos and see patient testimonials?

Rhinoplasty ‘before and after’ photos as well as testimonials of previous patients will allow the patient to gain better and more realistic insights about the procedure and the practice.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty Nose Surgery | Dallas Plastic Surgery

Model, not actual patient.

Preparation is a key aspect of rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery procedure. Safer and more satisfactory outcomes are usually achieved by patients who are well-prepared for the surgery.

Preparation Before Initial Consultation

Preparation for rhinoplasty can begin from the moment the patient has made up their mind to go ahead with the procedure. Prior to visiting the surgeon’s office for the pre-op consultation, the patient should:

  • Ask for their medical records to be sent from the physician and any specialists to the office of the nose surgeon. The surgeon will be able to determine the patient’s fitness to undergo a procedure such as rhinoplasty.
  • Contact the health insurance provider to check if there are any conditions in which the costs of rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery may be covered by insurance.
  • Arrange the relevant medical insurance documents to carry to the surgeon’s office for the consultation.
  • Make a detailed list of current prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal supplements and vitamins, and show to the surgeon during the consultation.
  • Learn more about rhinoplasty as well as the surgeon’s practice through their official practice website to be able to ask relevant questions from the surgeon before making a final decision.
  • Select photos from publications or websites that best represent the kind of nose that the patient may like to have.

Your Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) Consultation

Your Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) Consultation | Dallas Plastic Surgery

Model, not actual patient.

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as nose reshaping cosmetic surgery, can be performed as an open or closed procedure using several surgical techniques. The procedure must be preceded by a comprehensive consultation to establish the patient’s candidacy and develop a customized surgical plan. A fantastic rapport between the surgeon and the patient and open communication are keys to ensuring a successful consultation.

Patient’s Goals

To begin with, the surgeon should have a clear idea about what may be bothering the patient about their nose and face, and what are their reasons for choosing rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery. During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will encourage the patient to share their personal cosmetic goals and needs with regard to their nose and face.

The patient may also bring along the photographs from magazines or websites to explain to the patient about the kind of nose they desire to have.

Health Evaluation

The surgeon will conduct a detailed review of the patient’s past medical and surgical records. They will also assess their current general health condition, and examine the shape of the nose, the quality and thickness of the skin in the area and the availability of bone and cartilage. The patient should share all information on health transparently with the surgeon for the sake of their own safety. They should not be having any such condition which could interfere with the surgery or delay the recovery.

Current Medications and Lifestyle

Prior to the consultation, the patient should ideally prepare a list of all the prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal supplements and vitamins that they are currently taking. The surgeon may stop or adjust some of the medications, and may modify the schedule of prescription meds in consultation with the physician.

If the patient is a smoker or a heavy drinker, they should be forthcoming about it, and follow the surgeon’s instructions carefully to refrain from smoking and drinking for a certain period of time before and after rhinoplasty.

Questions to Ask

During the consultation, the patient will have the opportunity to clear all their doubts and concerns about the practice, the procedure, the costs and other aspects. They should freely ask questions, and preferably have a detailed list of questions ready, which they can carry along to surgeon’s office for the consultation.

Developing Realistic Expectations

The patient may request for a video of the rhinoplasty procedure or a set of rhinoplasty before and after images pertaining to earlier patients. This will help them to form realistic expectations from rhinoplasty, and improve their chances of satisfaction from the final results. Testimonials of past patients may also be requested to learn about the experiences of other patients.
