Breast Augmentation Risks and Safety

Breast Augmentation Risks and Safety

Breast Augmentation Risks and Safety | Dallas Plastic Surgery | Implants

Breast augmentation currently ranks as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure in the US, according to the ASPS figures. With improvised surgical techniques and innovative implant qualities, the procedure has become safer and more sustainable over the years. However, it will still have some risks, which are typically associated with any surgical procedure, in addition to implant risks.

During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will explain the benefits and limits as well as the potential risks and complications involved in breast augmentation. The first goal of a responsible surgeon will be to help the patient make a well-considered choice. Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Farah Naz Khan provides breast augmentation to patients in Dallas, Texas and surrounding locations.

Breast Implant Risks

Some risks are unique to breast augmentation because it involves the placement of saline or silicone breast implants.

Capsular Contracture

As the implants are embedded in the breast tissue, the body will have a natural immune response against them to form scar tissue around them. Sometimes for unknown reasons, the scar tissue may tend to contract or harden, placing the implants under undue pressure.

The soft implants will get squeezed because of the tightening scar tissue, resulting in loss of position or shape of the implants, or damage to the outer implant shell. As the breast capsule gets harder, it may cause pain. In this condition, breast implant removal or replacement plastic surgery may have to be performed.

Implant Rippling

The size of the implant should be chosen in accordance with the amount of skin availability to cover the implant adequately. If the implant size is disproportionately large, it may cause the implant to develop folds or creases. This can create a rippling effect on the surface, distorting the natural breast appearance.

The risk can be minimized by choosing the appropriate implant size and shape according to the breast anatomy and the amount of skin available. Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Khan receives patients from Dallas, Texas and nearby areas for breast augmentation.

Implant Damage or Shifting

In a few cases, soon after the procedure has been performed, the implant may shift from its original position. The risk of displacement is higher in case of larger implants. The risk of implant damage or rupture exists in all types of implants.

If the rupture occurs in saline implants, the problem will be immediately noticed because the implant will deflate. But in case of silicone implants, the rupture may only get identified during an MRI exam. Rupture or damage may be addressed with a breast revision surgery.

Surgery-related Risks

Infection

Infection risks are inherent to almost any type of surgery. The surgical facility should maintain a totally sterile environment to minimize the risk. The surgeon may prescribe antibiotics for a few days after surgery to reduce the post-operative risk of infection.

Numbness in Nipples

Altered sensation, sensitivity, or numbness in the nipple area may occur following breast augmentation surgery. The condition normally resolves on its own but in rare cases, the condition of numbness may be prolonged or permanent.

Unfavorable Scarring

Some degree of scarring is inevitable after breast augmentation, but discreetly located incisions can help to hide the scars as far as possible.

Dr. Khan contributes to Cosmetic Surgery Times

Cosmetic Surgery News Dr Khan

New Year, now what?

Dallas, Texas, plastic surgeon Farah Naz Khan, M.D., says 2017 is a year for practices to focus on improving their social media marketing (especially Instagram and Facebook).

“Instagram is especially useful because surgeons can post before [and] after pics and instantly get the point across! Most patients feel worn out after the holidays, and while they may be low on cash, they are looking for ways they can feel better and look more refreshed without spending too much money,” Dr. Khan says. “To that end, noninvasive services, such as fillers and Botox and treatments for facial resurfacing/skin tightening via lasers/radiofrequency machines are big in January [and] February.” Read the full article.

Breast Implants Procedure Steps

Breast Implants Procedure Steps | Dallas Plastic Surgery | Implants

Model, not actual patient.

Breast implant cosmetic surgery is a major procedure involving several key steps. Although different surgical techniques may be used to perform breast augmentation, but the overall steps will largely remain the same in each case. Breast implant surgery is one of the more customizable procedures, which can be tailored to meet the unique needs of a patient.

During the pre-op consultation, the breast surgeon will explain to the patient about the steps involve in the breast implant procedure. When the patient feels more familiar with the procedure, it will help to relieve her pre-surgery anxiety and make her more confident about undergoing the surgery. Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Farah Naz Khan provides breast implants to patients in Dallas, Texas and surrounding locations.

Anesthesia

To begin with, the patient will be placed under anesthesia once she is wheeled into the operating room. General anesthesia is usually applied in case of breast implant surgery, which will be administered by a qualified nurse anesthetist or an anesthesiologist. Following the completion of surgery, the patient will be brought out of anesthesia, but will continue to feel groggy for a few hours.

After a few hours of monitoring, the surgeon will usually allow the patient to return home the same day of the cosmetic surgery. The patient should have some responsible to drive her back home. She should also arrange for some professional aftercare for a day or two or have some family member or friend stay with her for this early recovery phase to assist with the household tasks.

Incisions Placement

Incisions will be placed in inconspicuous sites after the patient is under the effect of anesthesia. These sites could be below the breast crease, below the arms, around the lower half of the areola, or in rare cases, in the navel area. The surgeon’s aim will be to keep the incisions well-hidden and minimize subsequent visible scarring.

The type and location of incisions will pre-decided at the time of surgery planning. The patient’s unique anatomical and aesthetic needs will be taken into account, and appropriate decision for incision placement will be made. Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Khan receives patients from Dallas, Texas and nearby areas.

Implant Positioning

The surgeon will place the breast implants either below the pectoral muscle or in front of the pectoral muscle just behind the breast tissue. The patient’s unique breast anatomy, the size the implants chosen and her personal aesthetic goals will be considered while determining the optimal implant placement. The pros and cons of each placement option will be discussed before a decision is made.

Wound Closure

Once the implants are placed and adjusted into the right position, the surgeon will close the incisions with dissolvable or traditional sutures. Temporary drain tubes will be placed in the incision area below the skin. The breasts will be covered with bandages for the first one or two days to protect the wound. Thereafter, the bandages will be replaced with a special surgical bra, which will have to be worn full-time for a few weeks.

Breast Implant Surgery Recovery

Breast Implant Surgery Recovery | Dallas Plastic Surgery | Implants

Model, not actual patient.

Innovative surgical techniques have made breast implant cosmetic surgery less invasive and less painful over the years. But the procedure is still a major surgery, and usually involves a significant recovery process. Patients should be committed to the recovery for their own safety and to achieve desirable final outcomes from breast implants.

Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Farah Naz Khan provides breast implants and various other procedures. During the initial consultation, Dr. Khan will explain various aspects of the procedure to the patient, including the estimated recovery. She provides breast implant surgery to patients in Dallas, Texas, and surrounding locations.

Rapid Recovery

A typical breast augmentation cosmetic surgery procedure entails a downtime of about one week to 10 days, and an additional recovery period of a few weeks when restrictions will apply to the patient’s movements and activity. In some cases, breast augmentation may also require the patient to stay overnight at the surgical facility.

But with the innovative, less invasive surgical techniques adopted by Dr. Khan, breast augmentation recovery becomes much faster and easier. Following the surgery with Dr. Khan, the patient can expect to return home the same day within a few hours. Most patients will be able to recover within 24 hours, and will receive detailed instructions from Dr. Khan for achieving a 24 hour recovery.

Incision sites in the breast area will be covered with bandages to promote safer and quicker healing. Dr. Khan will prescribe a few oral pain medications to keep the patient completely comfortable during the early recovery phase. She encourages the patient to return to their regular lifestyle and physical activities as soon as possible.

When the patient maintains normal movement, it will improve the blood flow and support faster healing. Specific range of motion exercises will be advised to the patient to aid the recovery process. Once the patient learns how to perform the exercises correctly, she can do it independently at home, and may continue it for a longer period beyond recovery for more sustainable outcomes.

Precautions

The unique 24 hour recovery process with Dr. Khan will not only allow for a faster recovery, but will also mean reduced pain and discomfort and minimal risk of complications. However, certain precautions must still be followed during recovery phase for the patient’s own benefit. She should keep herself sufficiently hydrated and have a balanced diet, including lean proteins to support healing.

The patient should refrain from smoking for at least the initial few weeks of recovery. Nicotine can hamper the flow of oxygen in the blood and delay the recovery process. Lifting of heavy weights, performing sudden, vigorous motions, bending down, or performing strenuous exercises should be avoided for at least two to four weeks.

This will ensure that the incision areas remain under minimal strain, and complete healing can take place at the earliest. The incision areas should be kept clean to safeguard against infection risks. Board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Khan receives patients from Dallas, Texas and other cities in the region for breast augmentation and various other surgical and non-surgical procedures.
